The Knob in Woods Hole is a major attraction for its nature walk, birding, marsh, coastal bank and its spectacular views of Quissett Harbor and Buzzards Bay.

Located near the site of the former Quissett Harbor House summer hotel and managed by the nonprofit Salt Pond Sanctuaries, The Knob includes several easy trails. They bring hikers through a wooded area that eventually opens to oyster-covered Fishermen’s Beach and out to Knob Lookout. On a clear day, visitors can see New Bedford in the west, the canal entrance to the north and the Elizabeth Islands to the south.

The property was a gift from Cornelia Carey, who wanted to make sure that the beautiful land was conserved. Today hikers can rest on the granite bench that commemorates Ms. Carey and her generous gift to Falmouth.

Although the property is on Buzzards Bay, visitors are asked not to access the water there for recreation because the shoreline has been carefully protected from erosion by large boulders. Little Sandy, a small beach along the inner section of Quissett Harbor, is accessible and is an ideal spot for children to play on the shoreline and look for shells, hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs and periwinkles. A note: Little Sandy is not a guarded beach.
